For a lot of us, our answer would have to be “Who wrote the Love Song of Your Life?” We often hear that a love song is a simple, powerful message that tells us how someone else felt about us at that particular time. That may very well be true, but what if the writer of the Love Song of Your Life never intended it to be used as a national anthem? What if the inspiration for the words was an episode from your past that has stuck with you? What if you have really grown and appreciate the lyrics and the story behind the words in that love song?

If you’re the one who wrote the song: then there is no question about who actually sang it and who wrote the lyrics. On the other hand, if it’s someone who truly understands the meaning of the lyrics, but simply sang them as if they were corny, we often ask ourselves if it was him or her who wrote the lyrics. Was it your brother, cousin, or best friend who wrote the words to your favorite love song? If so, the person who did write the lyrics, even though they may have been young when they wrote it, will appreciate you immensely for giving them the gift of songwriting.

Who wrote the dance? Was it you, or was it your brother, cousin, or friend? If it was you, can you forgive him or her? If it was your friend, can you forget him or her? Did you help to shape the Love Song of Your Life into a great love song?

Remember, when you are looking back: at the lyrics in the perspective of those who loved the love song and the songwriter, you must think about how they saw the love song, not at the moment it was being created. After all, that’s only a past event. Now, can you see yourself writing a love song now? That’s the question!

Looking back as the artist: what were your thoughts as you created the love and music video? Did you wonder who wrote the dance and song (or were you just thinking along the same lines)? Did you wonder if your dance was big enough and memorable enough as a song for the winner of “American Idol” to sing on stage?

When songwriters and artists thought: about who wrote the song, it’s not just about the lyrics and melody. Songwriters and artists can use creative imagination and insights into the creative process, to see themselves as authors of their own songs. As we continue to move forward in songwriting, there are many more aspects of songwriting that have yet to be discovered. Writing a love song requires the creative thinker to put a spin on an old, familiar story, to make the characters come to life.

When an artist sits down to write a new love song, they have to imagine how the character created by the songwriting process will act, and whether that character acts according to the imagined scenario or according to their actual personality and circumstances.
