“You Don’t Know How It Feels” by Tom Petty is a very good read for those looking for a motivational and thought-provoking read. The author, who is better known as America’s Voice, takes on the public’s perception of the topic of divorce. The book is not at all what you would expect. In fact, it is very much unlike anything else you have ever read before. The author takes on the public’s scrutiny with both feet and asks them a very pointed and difficult question: what does it feel like to lose your spouse?

In this book you will find – that Tom Petty has taken his stance on a very controversial topic. Divorce is no longer a topic held in hushed tones but instead is something most people discuss daily. Many are even hoping for a second chance at a divorce. The sentiments expressed throughout this book are very raw and reveal a man fighting to make up for the pain he has caused his former wife and children. In many ways it feels like a coming of age story detailing the progression of a young man who wants to live a life of freedom and happiness after breaking up with his wife.

So what did you think when you first read this story? Did you identify with Tom’s story and what he was going through? The author captured the reader’s attention right away with an engaging voice and a way of writing that kept you wanting more. The writing style is clear and easy to follow along with and at the end of each paragraph, you can almost visualize what Tom’s life will be like without his wife.

The first few chapters give you an idea – of what to expect as you follow Tom from his early days as a teenager to his years as a married man. You get to feel what it’s like to live with a man and you get to see what it’s like to be divorced. None of this was in my expectations, but I still enjoyed the book and found myself thinking and laughing along the way. Some of the moments in the book made me teary eyed. Reading about how Tom reacts when his wife leaves and how he tries so hard to change her decision, made me laugh out loud several times. It brings back memories of my own divorce.

At the end of each chapter there is a message for women – It’s a positive and encouraging message and although it may seem like a small thing, I liked that. The message was that while sometimes men need a reminder that they are still the ones in charge, they should never let their ego get in the way of giving their wives the kind of love and support they need to nurture their children.

Overall, this was a very good read – If you have a copy of “Tom Petty and the Surprising Way That He Knows How It Feels”, you should immediately download the free book so that you can feel what it’s like to be Tom. I highly recommend it!
